Technical Terms Explained

Oracle, who had been the darling of investors, saw itself in doubt after it announced that it only achieved 14% gross profit margin on its US$900 million Nvidia cloud sales.

Why was this such a concern?

Let’s first understand what is a ‘gross profit margin’?

Gross profit is the profit left from deducting the costs associated with producing and selling the product or services or cost of goods sold (COGS).

Gross Profit = Revenue - Cost of Goods Sold

It doesn’t take into account operating expenses such as sales, marketing, administration, interest, and tax expenses.

A gross profit margin is the gross profit of the company divided by its revenue, which shows how much the company is getting after deducting for COGS.

Gross Profit Margin = Gross Profit / Revenue

A low gross profit margin means that you are getting very little money from selling a product.

Investors are worried about Oracle’s gross profit margin now because it gets much higher gross profit margins from other products.

Stock of the Week

AMD is definitely the stock of the week.

OpenAI’s deal with the company has set the market on fire. Though it comes with conditions.

  • AMD issued warrants to OpenAI that allows it to own about 10% of the company in the future.

  • AMD’s share price has to reach about US$600 for the last tranche to be unlocked.

  • OpenAI will deploy 6 gigawatt of AMD GPUs based on a multi-year, multi-generation agreement

AMD’s fortunes have also rose with the AI boom.

  • Revenue almost tripled from US$9.8 billion in 2020 to US$25.8 billion in 2024.

  • Growth in 2025 has been strong too at an average of 33%

Yet again, another company is taking a 10% stake in another AI player. It was Nvidia who invested in OpenAI before this.

The AI boom still has a lot of legs to run on.

Hope the above is fruitful for you all..

Cheers,
James Yeo
